Applying to an American college or university can be confusing and time consuming. The process can be greatly simplified if you follow certain steps.
For most students, the first stage is the most difficult because it requires a great deal of thought and patience. Keep in mind the more time you devote to selecting a school that is right for you, the happier you will be in the long run.
Setting Goals
The first step in the process is to set personal and academic goals. You should be able to answer the following questions:
- What area of study do you wish to obtain your degree in?
- Do you want to transfer to a university after two years in a community college?
- What degree do you wish to earn? An A.A.? B.A? M.A.?
- Does the degree require 2 years, 4 years, professional or graduate school?
- Do you prefer a public or private institution?
- What state do you want to live in?
- Do you want to live in an urban, a suburban or a rural area?
- How much can you pay for tuition and living expenses?
- Do you want to attend a small or large school?
- Do you want to attend a school with a large number of international students?
Considerations
- If you are not sure of your major or career, community colleges offer the greatest opportunity to experiment. Some schools may allow you to choose your major field after the second year of study, while others may want you to choose after the freshman year.
- If it is possible, visit the schools that interest you and try to speak with advisors and students. This is the best way to get a good idea of the environment and the school.
